Angelica 2.x

Index · Previous: The memory campaign · Next: Applied Energistics and its addons (1 of 3)

Angelica went from 1.0.0-beta66b to 2.2.10 across this release: the 2.x rendering engine stopped being an experiment and became what the pack ships. Celeritas replaced the old chunk renderer, shader support was rebuilt on Iris, and the long tail of that work is two hundred fixes for the mods that render through it.

Angelica 2.0 and the Celeritas renderer

Angelica now uses the new Celeritas rendering engine (based on Sodium 0.5) for improved FPS and reduced frametimes. It works with Iris Shaders and supports both the classic Java 8 / LWJGL2 setup and the Java 17+ / LWJGL3 setup via lwjgl3ify.

Proper AO and Better Shader Support

Angelica now does proper ambient occlusion and has much better shader-pack support. The new Celeritas rendering engine integration enables better visual effects with shader packs and enhanced dynamic lighting.

Compact connected textures in Angelica

Angelica gained compact connected textures: a mode that packs a full CTM tile set into a fraction of the texture space, plus a compact_expanded mode that generates the variants at runtime so a resource pack does not have to ship them. Glass and stained glass were converted to it, CTM now reads neighbouring blocks for transitions, and the mining and breaking overlays draw over it correctly.

This is the renderer work that GregTech's connected textures are built on; see Connected textures across GregTech for what was done with it.

Complementary Shaders ACL Support

Angelica gained the modern Iris features that Complementary Reimagined's Advanced Colored Lighting needs (shadow compute shaders and setup/begin pass support), so ACL's colored lighting now works in the pack. Thanks to SpacEagle17 (Euphoria Patches) for pointing out the required features and helping pinpoint what was missing.

New features and options

Dirt, grass, sand and about seventy other blocks now get their top face rotated pseudo-randomly, so large flat areas stop looking tiled (on by default, block list configurable). Angelica also emulates OpenGL secondary color, fixing mods that used it. New shader settings are searchable and easier to configure, while smooth zoom and expanded font loading from config folders make the client feel more polished.

Rendering and shader changes

Angelica's Iris-based shader support was ported onto the Celeritas renderer and the GL 3.3 core profile, closing out a long tail of compatibility bugs along the way: entity and item textures and lighting no longer break when a name tag shows up on screen, texture parameter caches are handled correctly across threads, and a pass of "various shader fixes" cleaned up CurrentRenderedItemID, arbitrary entity targeting, and shaders that wouldn't compile without a world0. NTM:Space got dedicated compatibility work, including a fix for sunset rendering that regressed in 2.0 and an update for its mixin targets in the obfuscated environment. Custom item lighting (currentRenderedItemId) now lets shader packs apply materials to items, armor, and horses. Vsync and frame pacing were retuned (on/mailbox/off modes, a Windows input-lag fix, and frame-pacer adjustments for the SDL presenter) to cut stutter and wasted GPU cycles, cloud rendering now follows the shader pack's own cloud setting instead of being drawn twice or not at all, and damage overlays were ported from modern Minecraft and made a config option so they stop z-fighting and no longer silently break on spiders and endermen. Player models render correctly again under Complementary's water-surface reflections.

Performance

Fixes to how other mods draw through Angelica eliminated allocations and cached work that used to be redone every frame; bases full of item-displaying blocks render about 3x faster. Item frame rendering and Intel GPU performance received targeted optimization, while the streaming system and display list handling now do significantly less work per frame. Lazy loading and immutable data structures keep memory churn down as you explore, and startup is shorter because the launch-time rewriting Angelica applies to other mods' rendering code is now much faster.

Fixes

Critical stability fixes addressed world leaks, thread-safety problems in tile-entity rendering, a color leak that tinted GUI text with world lighting, and a race at boot that could leave you on a black screen. Broken mods that relied on old rendering hooks now work again, sign rendering is corrected, and CubicChunks integration no longer crashes while tile entities are snapshotted for rendering. The SDL backend and frame pacing received numerous tweaks to reduce stuttering and edge case crashes.

Angelica Shader & Rendering Fixes

Fixed inventory items turning into white squares on world join, entity and item textures breaking under shaders whenever a name tag was on screen, and several shader-pack compatibility bugs. Players using shader packs or experiencing texture glitches should see significant improvements to visual consistency and performance.
